Louis Veuillot was born in Paris on 5 February 1820. He was educated at the Collège Stanislas, where he gained a love of natural sciences. He gained an entrance scholarship to the Sorbonne, but after leaving it in his third year, he devoted himself entirely to literature. His first work of prose appeared in 1844, and immediately attracted attention by its remarkable clearness of style
In 1853 he became editor of the "Revue des Deux Mondes." In 1864 he became associate editor of "Le Temps," which position he held until his retirement with the end of that journal. His political opinions are republican, although he is no partisan. He has been for many years one of the most frequent contributors to the "Revue des Deux Mondes," and has written numerous essays on varied subjects.
